Orchids

The orchid genus is among one of the largest plant genera in the world. More than 20,000 species are known and more are regularly found. Orchids can be found all over the world, including in Europe, North America and northern regions of Asia. In warmer regions, orchids often grow on trees, on branches and twigs, often with the roots in the air. These are called epiphytic orchids. On rocks grow the lithophytic species and in soil grow the terristic orchid species. In the cooler regions in the North and South of the globe, mainly terristic species grow. In Europe and often elsewhere in the world, these are usually protected and may not be picked or dug out. Imports and exports are strictly regulated. Very many orchid lovers in Belgium grow tropical orchids on the windowsill, in showcases or in greenhouses or in the garden the so-called European orchids. "Every orchid lover owes it to himself to be a good conservator of his or her plants and thus to contribute to the preservation of the species, their protection and distribution."
